Alausí is a picturesque town about 2 hours away from Riobamba. It is known for its architecture with its old houses and cobblestone streets. The famous Nariz del Diablo train ride departs and returns here and the town has a busy Sunday market.
After an early breakfast we will head to Alausí in private transportation, which is a 45 minute ride away from Guamote. On Sundays Alausí streets fill with so called cholos and cholas coming from the next villages and towns around to the market, to buy, sell, offer their products, that are grown and picked with their own hands. Throughout the streets you get to see all kinds of animals, fruits and vegetables stands and people selling clothes on the different plazas. After strolling around town, we will check in at the Alausí train station from where our train will depart at 11:00h.
Nariz del Diablo
This is a truly spectacular train ride that rides from the town of Alausí to the village of Sibambe. The train ride goes along the mountain ´Nariz del Diablo´ (Devil´s Nose). In 1861 former President Gabriel Garcia Moreno started the project of an Ecuadorian Railway, crossing the entire country. When they got to Alausi they had to overcome the biggest challenge of the whole project: the steepest descent of any section of railroad track in the world. To overcome this obstacle a steep zigzag railroad was built that descends 535 meters in less than 12 km. It today remains an impressive piece of engineering. You will make a short stop at a viewpoint to appreciate this major engineering achievement that led engineers to call this train the most difficult in the world. You will then make a stop in the village of Sibambe where you will be welcomed with a traditional dance performance. After visiting the small interpretation center in which you can learn about the traditions and worldview of the Puruhuas in Sibambe, the train will return to Alausí. The round trip takes 2,5 hours in total.
Once back in Alausí we will enjoy a delicious lunch in a nearby restaurant. Afterwards you can be brought back to Guamote (arrival around 15:30h) or to your accommodation in Alausí.
