At roughly 55 km of Guamote, taking winding roads through amazing paramo landscape, you’ll find the authentic Indigenous community of Ozogoche. The community is located at the edge of National Park Sangay, a park with in total over 300 beautiful lakes! During the trip you will visit two of them and get an impression of the daily life of the people in the mountains. At 3800m asl. you will get to see astonishing views of a unique part of Ecuador that is still a piece of pristine untouched nature.
Our guide, along with a local guide will take you on a walk showing you the astounding surroundings, explaining you about the local traditions, legends and mysteries that surround the lakes, such as the curious phenomenon of the suiciding birds which no one ever was able to explain. Every year in August, hundreds of migratory birds plunge deep in the icy waters of the lakes and kill themselves.
You will take adventurous trails, crossing freshwater rivers and passing huge rocks. Going up 200m to the viewpoint or take it easy and walk to the lake. Brave people can even take a swim in the cold lake.
After the walk there will be a traditional lunch ready with fresh trout for us to enjoy (best trout in the country!). In the afternoon we will drive back to Guamote.
