Healthy School Lunches

Inti Sisa has been working closely with the Palacio community school for many years. One of our proyects for this school is to donate nutritious food baskets so that the children can eat a healthy school lunch every day. Malnutrition is a serious problem in Ecuador. 55% of children in this region are malnourished. This affects not only their physical development (stunted growth), but also their psychological advancement and their ability to study and learn.

Many children come to school without having eaten a proper breakfast. Inti Sisa wants to ensure that these children get a healthy lunch at school every day. Every week we donate a basket of nutritious food to this school run by teacher Marcelo with his 11 students. Their mothers take turns cooking a healthy balanced meal in the school kitchen.

Nigely and Mateo, two enthusiastic youngsters from Guamote make weekly purchases at the Thursday market and make sure the food gets to the school. This way they learn about managing budgets and constructive planning and cooperation.

This school year we gave the proyect an extra sustainable impulse by creating a vegetable garden with the children and parents, under the expert guidance of our newest Inti Sisa crew member Jhocelyn, an inspiring young women who graduated from university as an agricultural engineer and wants to give something back to her community.
