Spay and Neuter Campaigns

In Guamote, as in other towns and villages in Ecuador, dog overpopulation is a major problem. The most effective solution to this problem is castration and sterilization to prevent further reproduction and reduce aggressive behaviour.

Inti Sisa works with local vets and a team from the United States to carry out free spaying and neutering campaigns in the Guamote region. Local youngsters always come to help during the campaigns, engaging in activities such as registering and preparing the animals, running the recovery area, and cleaning medical supplies. Their involvement makes a huge difference, and through their hands-on learning, they gain invaluable skills. These experiences have even inspired some of them to pursue dreams of becoming veterinarians.

Thanks to more than 1,300 procedures carried out over the years, there has been a marked improvement in the (street) dog population. Moreover, the many enquiries about future campaigns show that we have not only had a positive impact on the lives of animals, but have also changed people's perspective and encouraged a growing concern for animal welfare.
